Get to know Columbus

Get familiar before you move.

01

Understand the different settings

A Columbus-area home search can include a downtown condo, an older neighborhood, an established suburb or a newer development. Start with the setting and home responsibilities you want, then compare specific communities and addresses.

02

Start with your work location

Confirm the office, campus or facility where you’ll actually work. Then compare routes at your expected travel times, including parking and the walk to your building. An employer’s Columbus address alone isn’t enough to choose where to live.

03

Plan the move, not just the search

A job start, the sale of your current home and the day you can take possession may not line up automatically. Share those moving parts early so we can plan visits, remote walkthroughs and the steps that need to happen before you arrive.

Lifestyle & culture

Life in Columbus

Columbus brings together the energy of a university city, distinct neighborhoods and a food and arts scene that gives you plenty to discover. North Market and independent restaurants are part of that story, as are the Short North’s galleries and the historic streets of German Village. Ohio State traditions run deep, with Crew soccer and Blue Jackets hockey adding to the local sports culture.

For your move, the useful question is how you want everyday life to feel. Would you rather walk to a neighborhood coffee shop, live near a busy district or come home to a quieter residential setting? Those preferences help us narrow the search beyond a city name.

Working in Central Ohio

Work & major employers

Columbus is home to major employers across healthcare, higher education, finance, research and manufacturing. Intel’s Ohio One campus and Anduril’s Arsenal-1 are adding to Central Ohio’s role in semiconductor and advanced defense manufacturing.

Healthcare

OhioHealth, Mount Carmel, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center have a substantial presence in the area. Confirm the specific hospital, office or care site for your role.

Education & research

The Ohio State University and Battelle are part of the region’s education and research base. Campus access and parking can matter as much as the drive itself.

Finance & insurance

JPMorgan Chase and Nationwide are recognizable employers in the Columbus region. Ask which office you’ll report to and how often you’ll be on site.

Manufacturing & corporate operations

Honda’s presence around Marysville and Cardinal Health in Dublin illustrate how employment extends beyond downtown Columbus. Start with your actual workplace when comparing communities.

Intel · Ohio One

Intel’s semiconductor campus in New Albany, Licking County, is a major investment in the region’s manufacturing future. The project is planned to create jobs in chip production and support a network of suppliers and related businesses.

Anduril · Arsenal-1

Anduril’s advanced manufacturing campus in Pickaway County, near Rickenbacker International Airport, produces autonomous defense systems. Its expansion is expected to bring additional manufacturing, engineering and support roles to the region.

Work & getting around

Where you work shapes your search.

Central Ohio’s employers span healthcare, education, finance, research and more. A role with Ohio State, a hospital system or another employer may take you to a particular campus or office—not simply “Columbus.” Confirm your work location before narrowing the map.

Compare the door-to-door trip at the times you’ll travel, including parking and the walk to your building. For hybrid work, think about both office days and the errands you’ll make near home.

Schools & your move

Schools & education

02 / Details that deserve a closer look

What to check before buying in Central Ohio.

The mailing address isn’t the whole picture

A mailing city, municipal boundary and school district are different things. Confirm the municipality or township for each home you seriously consider, and verify the district and assigned school directly with the district rather than relying on the listing or ZIP code.

Coordinate the move from both ends

If you’re selling a home elsewhere, share that plan early. Coordinate with your current agent, lender and title company so the sale, purchase and possession arrangements work together. If your employer offers relocation assistance, review its requirements before choosing providers or booking your move.

Look beyond the finishes

Fresh paint and updated countertops don’t answer questions about drainage, prior water intrusion, roof age or mechanical systems. Wells, septic systems and shared access may need attention where applicable. I can help identify questions during a showing; qualified inspectors evaluate the condition.

Plan ahead for new construction

Discuss representation before your first builder visit or registration so you understand the builder’s policies. Ask how construction updates, walkthroughs and inspections will be handled if you’re out of state, and plan for the possibility that completion and your move may not line up.

03 / On your schedule

Make your house-hunting trip count.

Planning a house-hunting visit

We’ll narrow the areas and homes before you travel, then group showings into a practical route. The goal is to leave with a clearer sense of what fits—not just a long list of houses you’ve seen.

Build in time to drive your likely commute, explore nearby errands and revisit a favorite. And leave room to say “not yet.” Your return flight shouldn’t set the deadline for choosing a home.

Before you book your visit

A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Discuss your financing and moving deadline.
  • Share work addresses and other regular destinations.
  • Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves.
  • Leave time to drive routes and revisit favorites.

Searching from another state

A live video walkthrough can show room flow, storage, the street, visible condition and exterior details that photos leave out.

We can focus on your questions: whether a room works as an office, how the garage is arranged or what’s behind the backyard. I’ll help coordinate video walkthroughs and inspection access so you can move forward from wherever you are.

Before your move

Your Central Ohio
relocation questions.

Can I buy a home before moving to Ohio?

Yes. We can begin with conversations, listing reviews and video walkthroughs while you’re elsewhere. Inspection access, financing and closing arrangements need to be planned for your purchase. Confirm any remote-signing options with your lender and title company before booking travel.

How should I prepare for a house-hunting trip?

Share your budget, financing status, regular destinations and moving deadlines before we schedule showings. A focused shortlist is more useful than trying to tour every suburb. Allow time to revisit a home or area that deserves another look.

How do I confirm a home’s school assignment?

Use the full address and contact the school district. Confirm both district membership and the assigned school, and ask about announced boundary changes if relevant. Treat listing information and third-party maps as starting points rather than final confirmation.

What if my moving date and possession date don’t match?

Bring up that concern early. Closing and possession aren’t necessarily the same date; access depends on the agreement. We’ll discuss your timing when considering an offer. Confirm the arrangements before committing to movers or deliveries.

When should I contact you about new construction?

Before your first builder visit or registration, if possible. We can discuss representation and questions about pricing, options, inspections and timing. If you’ve already contacted a builder, tell me so we can clarify its policies before proceeding.
