Country Charm in Johnstown, Ohio
History: Johnstown was carved up a parceled out as a way to thank Revolutionary War heroes for their service. Some of these families still make their homes here. The first settlers broke ground in the early 1800s; many of them were New Englanders seeking the wide-open spaces of the Midwest. Agriculture played an important role then – and today, with corn and soybeans still yielding the primary crops. In the early 1900s the railroad came to town and the population tripled. The next population migration occurred in the 1950s, spurred by new home development. More recently, four new subdivisions went up and a brand new business district was created. The future of this “little town that could” look very bright.
Population: 4,763 as of the last census and trending upwards.
Quality of Life: Excellent: Low taxes, low crime, decent schools and a quiet small town vibe make Johnstown one of the fastest growing rural communities in the region. The commute to Columbus via some of the smaller state highways, is fast and easy, but the village is equally close to smaller cities like Mount Vernon, Delaware and Newark. The central location of this village marks it as desirable, along with a low cost of living. Several corporations make their home here: Kroger Company, Tech International, Star Pizza Box and Apeks all have a national presence in their respective industries.
Schools: Johnstown-Monroe Local School District.
Taxes: $18.758 per $1,000 of valuation.
Johnstown Events and Activities: The Johnstown Farmers Market is excellent and surprisingly large. It starts each June and runs through September. Even better is the 72nd – really! – Johnstown Swappers Day. This is a huge event where you can pick up a new rifle, or buy some Amish homemade pie, find an antique or swap a hunting dog. This is an absolute must go to event, you will find incredible bargains, grab lunch, and make new friends. It’s held every Labor Day weekend, rain or shine.
