Facts About Galena Ohio

History: Galena was incorporated as a village in 1809. Water and gristmills were quickly built at the intersection of Big and Little Walnut creeks. Galena is the natural mineral lead sulfide that this farming community was named after. Driving through the village you will see many of the original brick buildings built in the early 1900s. The community served as the center of industry up until the early 1980s, hosting the Galena Shale Tile and Brick Company. Today, their hand-molded bricks are a collectors item.

Population: Just shy of 400 residents with a median family income of around $50,000.

Quality of Life: Galena is a quiet, crime-free town, with a short main street filled with a handful of local businesses. Residents typically commute to work in nearby Delaware or south to Columbus. This is a low-key, desirable place to plant roots; it is one of the few traditional farming communities in the area, with corn and soybeans still the predominant crop. The Sherman Lakes subdivision is one of the more sought after communities in the region; new and refurbished homes dot a scenic, peaceful lake setting.

Schools: Here’s the best news of all about Galena: Great Schools ranks their school district scores a 9 out of 10 based on academic achievement.

Taxes: Taxes are very low here, making a typical 4-bedroom, 3-bath home more affordable. Average home prices range up to $450,000 or higher, but the bang-for-the-buck cannot be beat.

Getting Around Galena: It’s just a short drive north to enjoy the Galena SummerFest, where you’ll find music, vendors and family-focused fun. The community is close to every city amenity, yet its attractiveness is as a get away spot; it’s a quiet place for a picnic or a nature hike. One must-see business to visit is The Galena Vault. Built in the original 1906 bank, the vault serves as host to arts and crafts from the region and a nice selection of antiques and collectibles.
