Getting to Know Millersport Ohio

History: Millersport history dates back to 1823 when the community sprung up as a stop on the Ohio-Erie Canal. It became the center of commerce and industry, serving as a hub for the important flow of goods across the state of Ohio. Today, the economy is still thriving, but this time under the tourist economy. In 2015, tourism to Buckeye Lake took a blow as the Army Corp of Engineers began shoring up the dam and walls of the man-made lake. Residents are expecting this project to be completed soon, so the grand reopening of this center of recreation can occur.

Population: 1300 and only limited by the volume of homes around the lake.

Quality of Life: Millersport resides on the western and southern banks of Buckeye Lake, which has traditionally been a popular resort destination in the area. The area stretches for more than 3,500 acres of scenic parts and recreational facilities. In the summer residents enjoy boating and swimming and in the winter snowmobiling and ice fishing. Homes here are highly coveted so the cost of living is higher, but the quality of life is worth it. Area Vibes rates Millersport with a 77%, with an A+ on crime and cost of living. The only inconvenience is the volume of amenities and the job outlook; just make sure you hit the big box retail outlet before you head home from work in Columbus or Newark and you will be just fine.

Schools: The average test scores for the Millersport Schools are 16% above the national average, but about on par with state medians. They scored six of 10 on greatschools.com.

Taxes: The median home value is 6% higher than the rest of the state, and the tax load is correspondingly increased as a result. With Buckeye Lake looming across the horizon, most residents believe this is worth the extra cost.

In and Around Millersport: Buckeye Lake is, in one word, a “blast.” For adults, it’s fun to hang out at the Buckeye Winery. Watching the sunset over the water is one of the most tranquil things you can do this summer. For a more raucous good time, consider the annual Sweet Corn Festival is the second largest community event in the state of Ohio. It’s like a mini-state fair with loads of entertainment, food and family-friendly events.
